GEKO JONES AND ATROPOLIS PRESENT: PALENQUE RECORDS REMIXED – OUT JUNE 25TH

GEKO JONES AND ATROPOLIS PRESENT: PALENQUE RECORDS REMIXED – OUT JUNE 25TH

Dutty Artz is proud to announce the release of a new compilation: Geko Jones and Atropolis present: Palenque Records Remixed. The compilation takes Afro-Colombian roots music from San Basilio de Palenque and re-imagines it in the hands of a host of global remixers.
San Basilio de Palenque is a small autonomous community in Northern Colombia on the outskirts of metropolitan Cartegena. The town was settled by African slaves who escaped bondage from Spanish masters in 1602, and is one of the oldest continually inhabited communities in the Americas. Its strategic geographic location has allowed it to be defended from attacks by outsiders throughout Colombiaʼs history. Its strong and unique local culture has forced subsequent governments to recognize the communityʼs continued contribution to Colombian national identity.
Like many maroon communities scattered throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, the culture of San Basilio de Palenque has a mix of African, European, and Indigenous American influences. However, the strong political identity of the community and its diaspora is unmistakably African. So its no wonder that when contemporary Afropop music started to make its way to the Colombian coast through vinyl LPs in the 1970s, it was the Palenqueros who first took up this music as a mark of community pride. Soon, Palenqueros and other Atlantic coast residents made up their own versions of the Afropop and Afro- Caribbean sounds they were hearing, resulting in the popular music called Champeta Criolla. In recent years, various incarnations of Colombian popular music, like Cumbia or Vallenato, have been well- publicized and celebrated internationally. However, the cultural music of San Basilio de Palenque, with an unbroken 400 year-old history that stretches back to the founding of the settlement, remains more obscured.
For the past decade or so, Palenque Records founder Lucas Silva has done field recordings in the town of San Basilio de Palenque of musicians such as Batata, Son Palenque, and Sexteto Tabala. To introduce this music to a wider club-going audience, Silva teamed up with Dutty Artz ambassadorsAtropolis and Geko Jones to curate a compilation of remixed works of Palenquero cultural music. The partnership was initiated when Atropolis met Silva, on a trip he took to San Basilio de Palenque with his New York DJ crew Cumba Mela, and the two of them decided to collaborate on a project. Geko Jones, a regular visitor to the Northern coast of Colombia and staunch advocate for Afro-Colombian music, came on board to help curate the compilation. Together, the two reached out to the Dutty Artz extended family for their remixes, with a host of talented producers such as Captain Planetwho turns in a wobbly pop banger, So Shifty who are on a hype German-soca tip, Matt Shadetek on a pensive melodic 6/8 run, and DJs Thornato and Chief Boima highlight the Congolese flavor that so inspires the Palenquero community. Geko Jones and Atropolis also submit their own productions, for an ultimate result that is a reflection of a continued cultural exchange that exists between New York and Colombia.

HIGHLIGHTS

Abelardo Carbonó, the godfather of champeta, is a legendary Colombian musician who reached a pioneering creative peak in the 1980s with his recordings in the city of Barranquilla . His music knows no boundaries and draws from Afrobeat, highlife, cumbia, Haitian compas, psychedelia…

This compilation presents the ground-breaking and kaleidoscopical work of this unclassifiable artist: the wonderful world of Abelardo Carbonó and his Afro- Colombian psychedelic sound.

Compiled by Lucas Silva of Palenque Records and annotated by Etienne Sevet.

DESCRIPTION

Abelardo Carbonó, the godfather of champeta, was born in 1948 in Ciénaga, a small town between Santa Marta and Cartagena , Colombia . He started playing guitar when he was eight or nine, just playing along with his father. His family moved to Barranquilla in 1959. Upon his arrival, he quickly went to become a police cadet as it was pretty much all the city had to offer him in terms of earning one's life.

At the turn of the 80s, Abelardo had almost two decades of being in the police, a job he "wasn't very good at". With his brothers Jafeth (bass) and Abel (solo guitar), he progressively formed what was to become the nucleus of the bands to come, developing their signature: a sharp guitar, a strong bass and a choir that only brothers' voices can deliver. The tropical pop sound, the groaning voice, the drum kit, the mix of rockish and tropical guitar that one would hear later in Abelardo's work, were already visible in his personal way of playing Caribbean music in these early days.

Although tracks like 'A otro perro con ese hueso' may not be exactly developing the same kind of sound, there was already a resemblance in terms of format and arrangement. The vallenato cajón drum, a traditional feature one would rarely consider beyond vallenato circles, was used here and would be used extensively by Abelardo in various contexts. With its childish voices drowned in reverb, the swinging electric bass contrasting with the acoustic guitar, and the funny lyrics about a man who promises a lot as the choir rejects his affirmations, the tune stood out of a 12-song compilation released by Sonolux and gained Abelardo's band attention from the music industry.

Other tracks like 'Quiero a mi gente' and 'Schallcarri' seem to testify once again that Fela Kuti's "Shakara" had a huge impact on the musicians from the coast; the West African and French Caribbean influence became more and more obvious in the band's work, despite Abelardo claiming that he wasn't listening to radio, nor looking for records. In fact, the most decisive influence was the African and Afro Caribbean one: it ranged from the Super Negro Bantous to South African music, the 45s from Kenya and of course Congolese music, Cameroon , Ivory Coast , Haitian music, French West Indies... Funk and pop were also important, just as vallenato, cumbia and porro to name a few.

For several years, Abelardo enjoyed the savoir faire and experience of the best studios around and worked with producers such as the great Eduardo Dávila, some sort of costeño Lee Perry, out of which came out memorable sessions with collaborations by legends like Michi Sarmiento and several artists from the Dolcey Gutiérrez Orchestra. The groove was the law, and what a groove!

In his albums for Felito, Abelardo recorded such gems as 'Negra Kulenge', ' Palenque ' or ' Carolina ', magnified by a great sound and a unique mix. But, for some reason he cannot explain, the follow up to those albums was not, as one could expect, immediate. He recalls having trouble to handle the destiny of his band and actively promote it to find gigs. Instead he even went to the Guajira region as a policeman or to work for the coal mine, supposedly to teach music in the mining company's schools there.

The best of this boundless artist is yet to come. Europe and the rest of the world is finally about to discover the talent of this kind of Colombian Tom Zé. A man representing the psychedelic yet groovyside of the Caribbean musical world, one of the best kept secrets of Colombian music.

Son Palenque is a legendary afro-Colombian band, founded in the beginning of the 80’s in the city of Cartagena (Caribbean coast), by the singer and composer Justo Valdez. Since then, this 7th people band has recorded 8 LP's of traditional Afro music, mixed with African and psychedelic influences. All their members come from San Basilio de Palenque, a very important village in the history of afro-Colombia. Palenque de San Basilio was founded by black maroons (running away from slavery), and has preserved many African traditions, as an Afro-Hispanic Creole language, the only one existing today in the Americas. The musical traditions of Palenque are very close to the music of central Africa, and the Bantu area (Congo, Angola, Cameroon). The music of SON PALENQUE has been reissued in the last years in Europe, in many compilations of Colombian and tropical music, as their music is very much appreciated by collectors and music lovers around the world.  ( see the compilation “Palenque Palenque”, on Soundway label)  The band plays rhythm as cumbia, chalupa, Bullerengue, lumbalu (played for funerals and other rituals), Son de Negro, and a huge variety of african rythms. The band concerts are like a journey through the history of afro-colombian music and culture, and the history of all the musical exchanges between Africa and America, during centuries of colonial history. Justo Valdez, lead vocal and composer, comes from a prestigious musical dynasty. He’s the son of “Ataole”, one of the best tambour players from Palenque, and was also part of the Batata family, the Valdez Salgado. The band recorded their first single in 1982 for the record label Orbe and were considered pioneers since most of their songs were sung in Palenquero. Ataole died, but the group continued and recorded two LPs for Felito where they incorporated percussion from Palenque with influences from Africa, the French Caribbean and soukous from Congo. Here we find three songs “El Sapo,” and “Palenque Palenque” (with Michi Sarmiento on Sax!!) recorded by Eduardo Dávila, and “Dame un Trago”. These two LPs opened a new path for Afro-Colombian music that the group has continued to explore until today. This is the latest project of Palenque Records (label that gave an international scope to the Creole Champeta at Tabalá Sextet at The Jolly Ambulances, and produced the posthumous album Paulino Salgado "Batata"), whose goal is to promote knowledge and transmission of the popular traditions of Afro-Colombia in Europe. The new album of SON PALENQUE would be released in 2011 by Palenque Records.

SYNOPSIS :
This documentary tells the story of the CHAMPETA or CREOLE TERAPIA, one of the most innovative, ignored and marginalized musical kinds of Colombia and perhaps of Latin America. This musical movement, which mixes African rhythms like Soukouss from Congo (ex-Zaire), Mbaqanga from South Africa and Highlife from Ghana-Nigeria, with rhythms of the French and English Speaking West Indies (Haïtian "Compass ", Socca, Calypso, and Reggae), runs as a Master on dancers 'feet all along the Colombian Atlantic Coast, from Turbo to Riohacha.  Born in the black districts from Carthagena at the end of the Seventies, and in villages like Palenque de San Basilio, this Afro-Colombian rhythm, made popular by some fish salesmen, shoeshiners and self-educated musicians of popular origin, is going to extent and to conquer all the country thanks to its West-Indian and Colombian rhythms.  The documentary is a portrait of CHAMPETA's most famous artists and discjockeys, as well as the story of the birth of this music, which looks like the one of Reggae and Rap in Jamaica and in the United States.  One of its goals is to make known the talent of these artists, humble people who built alone and without any help all the necessary structure for the production and the distribution of this music:  independent labels, recording studios, disc stores... and a public which shows its support at every new production. African rhythms of the whole world, mixed with the rhythms of our Colombian Caraibes, meet in Carthagena to mix with the new vacile efectivo of Creole Terapia.
